The
museum was created on the ground floor and basement to commemorate Kirkaldy and
his major contribution to Victorian engineering.
The
refurbishment included an early use of intumescent paint to preserve the
appearance of cast iron columns.
On
completion the Trust managed the building for four years, whereupon the museum
was leased for a peppercorn rent to a separate trust and the building was sold
with protective covenants.
