The
Granary at Treribble, Hertfordshire is part of a formal group built around
1730. The building may have originally been a cider house but was adapted
as a granary in the 19th century and latterly used as an animal shed.
Being
disused it was in danger of becoming derelict and destroying the symmetry of the
building group. The Trust wanted to
show it could create a satisfactory dwelling house without destroying intrinsic
features.
Existing
door and window openings were kept and two new windows were positioned so as to
maintain the barn-like appearance of the western facade. Finishes and details were kept simple in keeping with the
agricultural origins.
